Obituary for Joy C. Ammons

Joy C Ammons, 78, of Kansas City, Kansas passed away peacefully at her home on April 27, 2019. A memorial service will be held at Highland Park Funeral Home on Thursday, May 9th at 11:00AM.

Joy is preceded in death by her parents John and Christine Reynolds and brothers Don and Grant Reynolds.

She is survived by her faithful husband of 55 years, Audie. Two Sons, Stephen Conrardy of Kansas City, KS and Mark (Doris) Conrardy of Columbia, S.C. One Daughter, Christine Conrardy (Mike) Lindberg of Kansas City, KS. Three Step-daughters, Connie (Greg) Graves of Leon, KS; Rhonda McAdoo of Wichita, KS; Mona (Tim) Heibert of Corona,CA. One Step-son, Audie (Phyllis) Ammons Jr. of Everton, MO. She is also survived by a total of 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren and new one on the way.

Joy was born on August 21, 1940 in Great Bend, Kansas but lived her childhood and early adulthood in Wichita, Kansas. In 1964, Joy and Audie were married and subsequently his job transferred them to Kansas City, where they settled in KCK.

In the mid 60’s, Joy began working at the Safeway grocery distribution center in the Argentine district as a clerk in the office, but quickly rose in the ranks, non-traditionally becoming a supervisor of warehouse workers. When her Safeway warehouse became a Food Barn warehouse in the mid 80’s, she decided to take a buy out to pursue her passion, making her stained glass hobby into a career.

For over 25 years, Joy created beautiful stained glass art, becoming a proficient Tiffany reproduction lamp shade maker. She lovingly created hundreds of shades, some for her family, but most to be sold and displayed in homes and businesses. Her love for the craft led her and Audie to share it with others, often teaching classes at the Bearden stained glass shops in Overland Park and Wichita. She was always so happy when she was able to share her love of glass with others.

Joy’s COPD for over a decade limited her and the things she once loved to do. She loved her memories of the many vacations taken with friends and family, especially grandchildren. She loved her outdoor spaces and seeing just how many plants she could fit in the yard before Audie put his foot down. She loved the many years of living at the Lake of the Ozarks and being able to share the beauty and fun of lake life with others. She loved Christmas, the color purple, and the KC Chiefs, but most of all she loved doing what she could do to make life better for her family.

Joy’s service will be officiated by her brother Don’s son, Jason Reynolds. We are thankful for the comfort he was able to provide her in her final days.

Over the last year, Joy’s team at Crossroads Hospice and Palliative Care helped to keep her home and limit her hospital stays. In her final hours, they were there to provide around the clock care. We are grateful for them, especially Tricia and Teyania, whom she loved and looked forward to their visits.
