Obituary for Vernon E. Phillips, Jr.

Vernon E. (Johnny) Phillips, Jr., 89, of Kansas City, KS, passed away peacefully with family at his side on November 14, 2019. A memorial service will be held on November 18, 5:30 PM, at London Heights Baptist Church, 734 N. 78th St., Kansas City, Kansas. A memorial gathering will follow from 6 to 8 PM.

He is survived by his wife Gwendolyn, of the home; son Steve Phillips, of the home; daughters Susan (Roger) Worner of St. Peters, MO; Karen (Earnie) Treff of Kansas City, KS; Kathy (Mike) Shirk of Paola, KS; Debra Phillips of Wichita Falls, TX; and Jennifer Phillips-Rodde of Prairie Village, KS. He is survived also by brother Andy Evans, Jr. of Iola, KS and sister Maxine (Richard) Cooksey of Allen, TX; twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Lee Phillips, and his son Mike Phillips.

Throughout his lifetime Vern lovingly served and provided for his family. In addition, he served his country in the US Army and served God and community through the church and Masons. He was also a leader and mentor to teens through Job’s Daughters and Boy Scouts. He was well-known for continually lending a hand to neighbors, friends and even those stranded on the roadside. Vernon will be lovingly remembered as a man that lived to make life a little easier for anyone he could, and to make others smile.
