Marilyn Maidie (Schnackel) Meek was born in the Township of James, Pottawattamee County, Iowa on August 25, 1926. She entered Heaven’s gates on August 27, 2019 at the age of 93.
Marilyn was an only child and loved growing up on the farm near Hancock, Iowa. She much preferred being in the fields or near the hog pens with her father to learning the chores of housekeeping, cooking and sewing. Marilyn was a graduate of The University of Kansas Geology Department Class of 1948 and had completed 15 hours towards her Masters degree prior to her marriage to John Reason Meek in the Fall of 1948 at a friend’s home in Kansas City, Missouri. She was the mother of two wonderful sons, John Reason Meek II born in 1949 and Ferrous Vaughn Meek born in 1951. Marilyn started working for the Boy Scouts of America Heart of America Council in 1956 where she managed the production of all printed materials for the council before retiring in August, 1991. She had continued as a member and avid supporter of the Boy Scouts until her death. She loved to read, especially about cars, cats or history. She enjoyed completing crossword and word search puzzles after reading the newspaper each morning. Marilyn was an active philanthropist involved in donating to numerous good causes some of which were the Boy Scouts of America, The University of Kansas Endowment Association, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Marilyn was predeceased by her parents, Melvin J. and Maidie (Sayre) Schnackel, her husband, John Reason Meek. and her son Ferrous Vaughn Meek. She is survived by her son John Meek and his wife Diane, niece Trish Delich and her husband Fred, and 4 great nieces. Marilyn was always considered a part of Diane’s family and enjoyed time at family events and holidays with them. She and her infectious laugh will be truly missed by them all.
The family will receive friends at Highland Park Funeral Home, 4101 State Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas on Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 3:00 – 3:30 p.m. with funeral services celebrating her life immediately following.
