Obituary for Jeanette V. Turner

Jeanette Turner, 92, of Kansas City, Ks., passed away Jan. 24, 2020 at her home. Services will be Sat. Feb. 1, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Eighth Street Baptist Church, 1420 N. 8th, Kansas City, Ks. Visitation will be from 9-11AM at the Church and burial will be in Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery.
Jeanette Turner was a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin, friend, advisor, and sister beloved. She was an active member of the Eighth Street Baptist Church since she joined in 1950. She is the only girl among five boys of the late Edward and Edith (Keith) Watson. Being the oldest daughter among her brothers: Edward, Earl, Donald, Robert, and James, she had to learn to assert herself shouldering the responsibilities of the eldest. Growing up in the Watson family meant prioritizing their lives to Christ, family and work. They were involved in numerous family own businesses in the Wyandotte County area, which kept them in close communication with one another in order to make their businesses prosperous.
As fate would have it, Jeanette would have one daughter and five sons. Her marriage to Herbert Simmons blessed her with one daughter Edith Diane, and four sons: Harold, Herbert, Joseph, and Michael. Later her marriage to John Turner blessed her with one son John, Jr. She has seventeen (17) grandchildren, a host of great grandchildren, a special nephew Robert Watson, Jr., and a host of other relatives. She was the matriarch of the Watson-Keith family.
She gave her life to Christ when she was a young adult woman. Shortly after becoming a member of the Eighth Street Baptist Church, she joined the Young Adult Choir and the Usher Ministry. Naturally, she out grew the Young Adult Choir, but she served faithfully in the Usher Ministry as financial secretary. She has served in various positions from first vice president, correspondence Secretary, and to financial secretary. Her proven skills of integrity, commitment and accountability are traits of her character of service. In 2010, she was the recipient of the Willie Funderburke Service Award that is awarded to the outstanding usher of the year. When the Mission Ministry Circles were active, she served in the Johnny Mae Freeman Circle and later joined the newly formed Queen Ester Mission Circle where she served as first vice president.
Jeanette has worked behind the scenes and didn’t mind who received credit because it was all for the cause of Christ Jesus. She has served in the Kitchen and Dining Room Committees for over thirty years. She was an active member of the Sunday Church School Class #4.
Jeanette loved Jesus Christ, family, Church, Church family, and her sisterhood friends (the posse): Que Wallace Daniels, Collen Funderburke, Azzine Barnes, Ruby Ellington, Margaret Randle and others. Even though her steps were fewer, her heart and soul was still committed to the Usher Ministry. Her work behind the scenes did not gone unnoticed. Her motto: “I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness” (Psalm 84:10b)
