Obituary for James "Jim" O. Shirley

James O. "Jim" Shirley, 88, Overland Park, Kansas, died September 2, 2020. His ashes will be interred at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Jim was born June 15, 1932 in Florence, Kansas to Ola and Emery Shirley.

Jim married Liz in 1953 while on a pass from the army, and they were together until her death in 1999. Their children Phil and Fran were born in 1966 and 1968, respectively.

Jim graduated from Parsons High School, where he was active in sports, in 1950. He attended Fort Hayes State, where he played basketball, and then the University of Kansas, where he received a bachelors degree in accounting in 1957. He was a member of Delta Sigma Pi fraternity as well as the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. After becoming a certified public accountant, he worked in Lawrence, Leavenworth, and Chanute Kansas, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the Kansas City area.

He loved to play golf, and in his retirement he enjoyed visiting his good friend Charlie Wolff in Florida to play in tournaments. He was also a lifelong Jayhawks fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jack Shirley, wife Elizabeth Shirley, and daughter Frances Shirley. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Philip Shirley and Anna Hood of Akron, Ohio, in addition to nieces, nephews, and their families.
